What was your favorite video game console growing up? Playstation or Xbox? Nintendo or Sega? Or do we go further back with Atari or ColecoVision?

The next generation of console gaming is on the horizon. Microsoft has confirmed it’s partnering with AMD to co-engineer custom silicon for the successors to the Xbox Series X|S. The announcement, made by Xbox president Sarah Bond, highlights a multi-year collaboration aimed at supporting Xbox’s vision of a flexible, cloud-enabled gaming ecosystem.

Microsoft’s goal is to make Xbox a platform accessible anywhere—across devices and stores—with cloud gaming playing a central role. However, the global inconsistency in network infrastructure remains a challenge for streaming-focused experiences.

Sony, meanwhile, is taking a different path. Hideaki Nishino, president of Sony Interactive Entertainment, reaffirmed that local gaming remains the priority for most players. While cloud gaming will serve as an optional feature, Sony is focused on delivering a powerful traditional console with the PlayStation 6 “top of mind.”

According to a credible industry source (via NeoGaf and Game Rant), both the PS6 and next Xbox will utilize AMD’s upcoming UDNA architecture—a rebranding of RDNA 5. This new tech promises 20% better rasterization and double the ray tracing performance of RDNA 4, which itself dramatically outperforms current-gen GPU architecture.

AMD only introduced RDNA 4 GPUs in early 2025, with UDNA-based PC hardware set to begin production in 2026. As a result, gamers can expect the PlayStation 6 and next-gen Xbox to launch no earlier than late 2027. Comment below with your thoughts.
